Acts of Service and Holiday Reflections

A Message From Penny Forward Founder and CEO, Chris Peterson

Today I wanted to share a little slice of life and reflect on the magic of relationships as we roll into the holiday season. Strap in, folks; it’s storytime.

You know, I’ve always been a sucker for lending a helping hand. From schlepping furniture during a move to fixing a leaky faucet, doling out financial advice, or even standing in court for a friend, there’s something profoundly rewarding about making someone’s day a bit brighter. And if you’ve read Gary Chapman’s “The Five Love Languages,” you’d know that Acts of Service is my jam. It’s like my love language on steroids.

Today was extra special. I had the immense honor of being part of a significant act of service for Brynn Lee, the maestro behind the scenes, weaving magic into our Penny Forward podcasts. Brynn, a luminary in the blind community, decided to take a bold step towards aligning her name with her true self. And guess who got a front-row seat at the Zoom courtroom extravaganza? Yours truly.

Picture this: a Zoom courtroom, a friendly judge, and about 20 minutes that will forever be etched in our memory. The atmosphere was surprisingly chill, defying all courtroom drama stereotypes. After the swearing-in ritual, the judge threw some questions Brynn’s way, ensuring this change was above board. Then, he turned to me and the other witness, seeking our vote of confidence. Brynn’s name change was greenlit, and we wrapped it up with a quick Facetime celebration before diving back into the day.

This experience got me thinking, folks. As the holiday season kicks in, let’s take a moment to appreciate the wealth we have in our relationships. Grab your phone, scroll through your contacts, revisit your social media pals, and don’t forget those folks you lost touch with. Pen down a note for each one, letting them know what they mean to you. You don’t have to hit send, but imagine the smiles if you did.

These relationships are the real treasures in life, more valuable than any stack of bills. We often underestimate the support network we’ve built over the years. So, take stock of your five love languages crew. You’ve got a list of people who are ready to express their love through acts of service, quality time, words of affirmation, gifts, or even a virtual hug. Cherish that wealth.
And here’s a nugget for you – if your list is a bit on the lean side, fear not. Every person on there has their own list, and they’re itching to introduce you to their crew. As we wrap up 2023 and gear up for 2024, let’s make a pact. Reflect on the riches you have in your friends, think about how you can strengthen those bonds, and maybe even venture into forming some new connections.

Cheers to the wealth of friendship, the joy of helping others, and the excitement of new adventures in the coming year!

Wishing you all a fantastic holiday season and a Penny Forward 2024!

With love and cheer,

Chris Peterson
