If you missed the April 15 tax filing deadline, don’t panic—but don’t wait either. The IRS encourages taxpayers who haven’t yet filed to submit their return as soon as possible to avoid or reduce penalties and interest, especially if they owe money.
File Now, Even If You Can’t Pay in Full
Filing a return promptly is important—even if you can’t afford to pay your full tax bill right away. The IRS continues to charge penalties and interest until the balance is paid in full. Fortunately, the agency offers flexible payment options, including installment plans and online payment tools. For more information, visit the Penalties page on IRS.gov.
Taxpayers who have a history of filing and paying on time for the past three years may qualify for penalty relief, so it’s worth checking whether you’re eligible.
Filing Options Still Available
Several electronic filing options remain available, including:
- IRS Free File – Available through October 20 for eligible taxpayers.
- IRS Direct File – Available in 25 states for qualified users.
Electronic filers can use IRS Direct Pay, the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), debit/credit card, or digital wallets to make payments securely. Those who pay electronically receive instant confirmation.
Expecting a Refund? There’s Still Time
If you’re due a refund, there’s no penalty for filing late—but you’ll want to file to claim it. Taxpayers who are below the income threshold for mandatory filing might still qualify for refundable credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit.
You can check your refund status using the Where’s My Refund? tool on IRS.gov, the IRS2Go mobile app, or by calling 800-829-1954.
