Twelve Banks That Offer Braille Statements

A Message from Penny Forward Founder and CEO, Chris Peterson

Dear Penny Forward Family,

Recently I received an email asking whether there were any banks that provide their statements in Braille. This is an important question, especially for those who are less comfortable with technology. I’ve done some research, and it turns out that several banks are committed to providing accessible services, including Braille statements. However, the legal requirements around this issue remain somewhat ambiguous, making it essential for customers to advocate for their needs.

Here are some major banks that explicitly offer Braille statements and prioritize accessibility:

  1. U.S. Bank: https://www.usbank.com/about-us-bank/accessibility.html
  2. Wells Fargo: https://www.wellsfargo.com/about/diversity/accessibility/#:~:text=For%20persons%20who%20are%20blind%20or%20have%20low%20vision&text=We%20offer%20raised%20line%20and,screen%20reader%2Dcompatible%20accessible%20documents
  3. Bank of America: https://www.huntington.com/About-Us/accessibility
  4. Huntington Bank: https://www.huntington.com/About-Us/accessibility

While the above information is readily available for some major banks, it might be a bit trickier to find details on Braille statements from other institutions like Capital One and J.P. Morgan Chase. Nonetheless, these banks often express their commitment to accessibility online.

Moreover, many smaller banks and credit unions also cater to the needs of visually impaired customers. Here are some links to their accessibility information:

  1. Citizens Bank: https://www.citizensbank.com/ada-compliance/overview.aspx
  2. Santander Bank: https://www.santanderbank.com/accessibility
  3. RBC: https://www.rbc.com/accessibility/banking-accessibly.html
  4. Truist Bank: https://www.truist.com/accessibility
  5. Veridian Credit Union: https://www.veridiancu.org/news/articles/braille-cards
  6. Greater Kinston Credit Union: https://www.greaterkcu.org/services/statements.html
  7. State Employees’ Credit Union: https://www.ncsecu.org/OnlineServices/Statements.html
  8. Navy Federal Credit Union: https://www.navyfederal.org/policy/accessibility.html

While it’s still unclear whether the Americans with Disabilities Act mandates banks to provide Braille statements if accessible online statements are available, the extensive list above shows that many institutions are actively working towards inclusivity. If your current bank doesn’t offer Braille statements, consider reaching out to them, expressing your needs, and letting them know that other banks provide this service. Your voice can contribute to making financial services more accessible for everyone.

Best regards,

Chris Peterson
