If you requested an extension in April to file your 2025 federal income tax return, the deadline for most filers is today, Thursday, October 15, 2026. An extension gave you more time to file—not more time to pay. There is generally no second routine extension to request today.
What should you do today?
- File your return by today’s deadline. Electronic filing may be the fastest way. If your 2025 adjusted gross income was $89,000 or less, check IRS Free File eligibility and options. Other filers can use IRS Free File Fillable Forms, tax software, or a trusted preparer. Save a copy of your return and your filing confirmation.
- File even if you cannot pay the full amount. The extension did not move the April 15 payment deadline. Pay what you can now, then review IRS payment-plan options. Filing late and paying late can have different penalties.
- Check whether a special deadline applies to you. Some people affected by a federally declared disaster, serving in a combat zone, or living abroad may have different rules. See the IRS disaster-relief notices and the IRS guidance for taxpayers abroad. Do not assume you qualify for another extension.
Why this matters to our community
For some blind and low-vision taxpayers, electronic filing can avoid a trip to an office or the challenges of reading paper forms. Choose a filing method that works with your assistive technology, and seek a trusted preparer if you need one. The IRS also offers accessible tax products and formats.
Your state tax return may have a different deadline. Check your state’s tax agency separately. For the federal rules behind today’s deadline, read the IRS Tax Tip issued October 14. Its reference to “tomorrow” means today, October 15.
