Lost your Social Security card? You may not need to replace it. If you do, starting online could save you a trip to the Social Security office—and the time and expense of arranging transportation.
If you are blind or have low vision, an office visit may involve navigating public transit, coordinating paratransit, paying for a ride, or asking someone to drive. Penny Forward is sharing this Social Security Administration (SSA) reminder because accessible online services can make it easier to manage your finances on your own terms.
First, find out whether you need the card
Knowing your Social Security number is enough for many purposes. According to SSA, employers, financial institutions, and other organizations usually need the number, not the physical card. Before arranging a replacement, ask the organization requesting it what documentation it accepts.
If you do need a replacement, SSA provides it free of charge. Going to an office will not get you a card that day; local offices cannot print one for you.
Start your replacement request online
Anyone can start the process online, even without an existing account. Most U.S. citizens can complete a replacement request online, but your circumstances determine whether you will also need an appointment.
- Start at SSA’s official website. Use the Social Security replacement-card application page (opens in a new tab) and answer the questions about your situation.
- Sign in or create an account when prompted. Follow the identity-verification instructions. SSA uses Login.gov and ID.me for access to your personal my Social Security account.
- Complete the steps SSA provides. You may be able to submit everything online. If an office visit is necessary, the process can help you schedule an appointment and identify the documents to bring.
- Watch for your card in the mail. SSA’s current guidance says it should arrive in 5 to 10 business days after the agency completes your request—not necessarily after you first begin the application.
Use your account for more than a replacement card
A personal my Social Security account offers a practical way to handle many tasks from home using your preferred assistive technology. Depending on your situation, you can review your earnings record, estimate future benefits, get proof of benefits, or manage information such as your address and direct deposit.
You can create or sign in to your my Social Security account (opens in a new tab) whether or not you currently receive benefits. SSA says the account is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so you are not limited to office hours.
If you encounter an accessibility barrier
Online access can remove a transportation barrier, but signing in or verifying your identity may still take extra steps. If a screen reader, magnification tool, or verification step is not working for you, you do not have to struggle through it alone.
Call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 for help with your request or to ask about an accommodation. You can also visit SSA’s accessibility support page (opens in a new tab) to learn how to report a website accessibility problem. Do not include your Social Security number, password, or identity documents in an ordinary email.
Save the trip when you can
Before you book a ride, check whether you need a physical card and begin with SSA’s online options. Even when an appointment is required, knowing what to bring can help you avoid a second trip. That leaves you with more time—and potentially more money—for the rest of your day.
